Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hall, Herron School of Art & Design
Indianapolis, Indiana
The site and landscape design for the new Herron School of Art & Design facilitates a creative educational environment and is integrated with the surrounding urban fabric and IUPUI master plan. The design intent was achieved on the north by orientation of a human-scale hedgerow and columnar plantings. On the site's eastern edge, earthen mounds arranged in a serpentine configuration provide controlled vistas from the building's interior toward an adjacent park and the city skyline. Connections are made on the site to allow barrier-free pedestrian flow to and from the campus to the north and the Canal and White River State Park to the southeast. Using a geometric layout inspired by classical proportions, a sculpture garden provides outdoor space for sketching, painting and exhibition of sculpture.
