Indiana State Library and Historical Building
Indianapolis, Indiana
The Historic 1933 Indiana State Library sits quietly on the campus of the Indiana State Capitol and Government Complex. In 1999, when the Indiana Historical Society moved across the central canal to a new building, BDMD Architects was hired to do a full renovation of the interior Library and the exterior public spaces. Working from historic site and landscape documents, BDMD Architects’ redesign of the plaza at the front entrance of the 1933 building recalls the original symmetrical intent while also incorporating the universal design principles of accessibility for a 21st Century library. Raised planters, steps and ramps where added to the plaza and flank the front doors while maintaining the formal mass and balance as approved by the State’s Historic Preservation office. Trees selected for the landscape design are native to Indiana and will, over time, recreate a canopy along the street providing shade for pedestrians to sit on historic cubic limestone walls that are a consistent element throughout the government complex. This project is a great example of the design sensitivity that BDMD Architects gives to historic and cultural landscapes.
