Indianapolis Museum of Art Site Expansion and Renovation
Indianapolis, Indiana
The main feature of the landscape architecture of the IMA is the formal Sutphin Mall originating at the existing Sutphin Fountain and extending 800 feet into the landscape above the underground parking garage and terminating at a new display of the noted Robert Indiana "Numbers." The mall is defined by two walks lined with Red Sunset Maples and a great lawn, creating one of the largest gardens above rooftop in Indiana. Sutphin Mall is used as a venue for events and festivals. The area surrounding Sutphin Fountain was transformed from an imposing, hard vehicular motor court to a soft, inviting garden. Eleven Dawn Redwood trees anchor the garden and will eventually reachheight of 75-feet, complementing the scale of the 90-foot tall facade of the new museum. This garden also features an outdoor dining patio and four seating areas defined by limestone benches that knit the details of the building architecture with the new museum landscape.
