Design solutions for this site are both functional and aesthetic. Parking lots were designed on the north and west sides of the building driven by the need to maximize parking but allow space for lush plant beds. A planting and irrigation design was created that enhanced Illinois Street with columnar trees and small flowering shrubs in a bed of groundcover and colorful perennials. Plants were specifically placed to shade interior offices from morning sun and, at the same time, frame views of the Scottish Rite Cathedral. The building’s entrance was graced with six pots planted with custom designed seasonal annuals. Walnut Street to the north was lined with ornamental flowering trees, kinetic grasses and bold flowering perennials. Space for future planting was created for plants to be divided and beds enlarged resulting in a fiscally sustainable solution.
