South End Site Development, Eli Lilly and Company
Indianapolis, Indiana
This extensive landscape treatment transformed the site surrounding Eli Lilly and Company's global headquarters from an industrial parking lot into a park-like environment. The 15-acre site features terraces surrounding the headquarters, which are softened by masses of perennials, canopy trees and a variety of ornamental trees. A focal point of the landscape design is the pond, which is enlivened by clusters of fountains and a stepping-stone crossing. As the pond begins to break from hard-edged boundaries into a natural form, the plantings also become more informal, with large groupings of native trees interspersed throughout. Because of its configuration, the pond is never entirely visible from a single location and is experienced as being larger than it is. Other amenities include a series of exercise paths that traverse the site and a corporate dining terrace.
