Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf interior design team took home a 2017 Interior Design Excellence Award for the Indiana University Global + International Studies Building during the 2017 IIDA Indiana award ceremony in March. Thank you to Indiana University and Ennead Architects for allowing us to work on such a beautiful and impactful project.
The Global and International Studies Building, a mix of both office and classroom areas, centralizes diverse programs previously spread out over the Indiana University Bloomington campus.
The new building houses 300 faculty offices and large areas for workstations. The auditorium, 13 classrooms, and six seminar rooms provide registrar controlled educational space. Large and small conference rooms are dispersed throughout.
The exterior architecture looks both to the past and to the future of the campus. The exterior façades are rendered in modern adaptations of recognizable details from the historic buildings on campus. While the Jordan Avenue façade is familiarly massive with punched openings and grouped windows, the multi-story lobby is a transparent glass enclosure that is designed to permit views within and beyond its boundaries as well as to and from Wells Library. The curved west wing forms a radial edge along The Arboretum, further integrating building and site.
Browning Day won four awards during the 2017 INASLA Professional Design Awards program on Sept. 22, as judged by the Pennsylvania Delaware Chapter of ASLA.
The landscape architecture team from Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf received the following design awards:
- Design Constructed Works Category– Merit Award for Gate 1 Plaza, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indianapolis, Ind
- Design Constructed Works Category – Merit Award for Indiana University’s Conrad Prebys Amphitheater, Bloomington, Ind.
- Design Constructed Works Category– Merit Award for Indiana University’s School of Global and International Studies; Bloomington, Ind.
- Planning and Analysis Category– Merit Award for 2017-2020 City of West Lafayette Parks and Recreation System Master Plan, West Lafayette, Ind.
On Oct. 19, Browning Day rounded out the awards season by taking home an Achievement in Architecture award for the Irsay Family YMCA at CityWay during the Monumental Awards gala. The awards, presented by the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, celebrate excellence in landscape architecture, interior design, neighborhood revitalization, architecture, design, engineering, construction and public art throughout the Indianapolis region.
“It was a pleasure for Browning Day to work on the Irsay Family YMCA at CityWay,” said Project Manager Nick Worden. “The dynamic design embraces the urban context by providing great views and connections to the surrounding downtown area. Furthermore, this facility provides a place for people to build a healthy mind, body and spirit through the many programs it can offer. It is truly a great asset for the Indianapolis area.”
The Irsay Family YMCA at CityWay provides the health and fitness components to round out the neighborhood. The YMCA site’s proximity to local business and industry allows it to be a hub of activity.
The YMCA building houses community-service facilities, as well as a medical office and retail food service tenant space. The internal circulation patterns within the first floor of the YMCA uses mid-block connectors, so patrons can easily access neighboring retail and residential services.
The YMCA provides its members a lap pool, a recreational pool, multiple basketball courts, an elevated jogging track, a large fitness area that overlooks the adjacent hotel plaza, multi-purpose classrooms, yoga and cycling rooms, teen and family centers, child watch, and beginner-fitness areas.
Several elevated, outdoor terraces and green-planted roofs complement the adjacent street-level park and pedestrian green spaces.
