Benjamin Harrison YMCA and PoolIndianapolis, Indiana
The Benjamin Harrison Branch YMCA commissioned Browning Day to renovate, combine, and convert existing exercise and meeting spaces into a larger, open fitness center. The design team was challenged to not only increase exercise space, but also open up the dark interior, and improve member circulation. In addition to the demolition of some interior areas to create new spaces, the project involved interior renovation, addition of windows, and new finishes. Corridors and smaller rooms were opened up to make one larger exercise space. The second phase of this project consisted of the addition of an outdoor pool and a new locker room facility to serve the YMCA branch and pool patrons. The pool includes lap lanes, a water slide, a zero-depth entry and wading area, and Splash Park features. The surrounding deck has ample sun and shade space for lounging and sunbathing. A sand play area and lawn have been added for recreation, while new fencing and landscape treatments complement the park-like expansion.
