Obelisk SquareIndianapolis, Indiana

Browning Day was honored to complete this transformative project that converted a city block from an asphalt parade ground into a beautiful urban park nestled in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. As the center of a five-block Beaux-Arts complex of parks, Obelisk Square was critical to the integrity of the mall. Its centerpiece is a 110-foot high obelisk with fountains that were renovated concurrently with this project. Respect for the character of the other blocks was maintained by allowing axial views across flat lawns to the obelisk, War Memorial and library.

At the corners, bosques of trees planted in a grid pattern create delightfully shaded seating areas. A grouping of 52 flags, brick pavers and beds of brilliantly colored flowers enhance this popular outdoor lunch area. The park is frequently the site of downtown celebrations.
